This novel seemed so interesting, and while I enjoyed it and it was an easy read, it left something to be desire.
The plot was very engaging and I felt that I couldn’t put down this novel; I wanted to know what was going to happen. I actually liked, and this comes as a surprise, the three different points of view that compose this novel. They weren’t distracting or confusing and I think they added a lot while keeping the reader rightfully in the dark.
The whole thing with Jake seemingly seeing ghosts, made me a bit uneasy. I didn’t know if this novel, that all in all seemed quite “realistic”, was going to turn into a supernatural horror story. So I kept waiting and in the end, all those sightings ended being explained by a logical and not supernatural explanation. In a way it made me disappointed, because we were edging for so long with the weird little girl and the scary kid on the floor, that I was expecting more.
And that was my main problem with this novel; certain points left me waiting for more.
I loved the twist of the crazy cult knowing were Tony Smith corpse was buried; but then barely anything happened with it. I wanted more investigation regarding it, I wanted more crazy suspects, I wanted a bigger motive behind the murders related to those weird people... but it didn’t happen.
In the same way, the murderer being Francis was kind of disappointing too; at that point I was expecting the body being a different kid and the murderer being old Tony, in a horrible twist of events. But no, it was he who became suspect two and we got confirmed that he was the murderer too early for my taste (even though it happened at the end). Francis not being Francis was a nice touch, I will give you that.
I also wish the murders have been more “explicit”, as to say, and that we could have seen more of the investigation when the point of view focused on Amanda and Pete (by the way, I wish we could have seen more of Amanda, she seemed like she could have been a really interesting character but she felt flat). I guess this novel went for a more personal touch, focusing more in the relationships of the characters and their feelings, and that’s all right because it did it well.
I really liked how Tom’s problems adjusting to being a single dad and coping with his wife’s lost and how Pete’s alcoholism were described, their inner battles (here I have to come back to a negative point, I also expected something fishy to surround Rebeca’s death, since Jake would avoid thinking about it and her death wasn’t truly described by Tom either).
In summary I would say this was a really entertaining novel and a fast read that I enjoyed, but my imagination ran wild while I was reading so my expectations were unfairly high and in a way I expected more.

A fun, spooky read. This story had good character development, but it did take a couple chapters for me to get invested in the story. I thought the end wrapped things up nicely, at least for most of the characters! This isn’t a Stephen King knock-off, but the author does show promise.

Nice pacing, compelling story, and kept me spooked throughout the book!

It would have been a 5 star rating for me but I was disappointed with the ending. I understand the symbolism of it however I was expecting it to go a different way.

Solid mystery. The serial killer genre can be hit and miss but this was good.
