I honestly thought I would hate this. I picked this up shortly after reading ACOTAR and had to put it down. The modern landscape against the love I had for the old school fantasy world of ACOTAR was jarring. But I could not get away from reviews on this book, so I picked it back up.

The beginning was hard to get through. The amount of characters and world building thrown at you in the first 20 pages is overwhelming. I had to intentionally read slow and reread to grasp all of the intricacies SJM was laying down. I like to think I have decent comprehension, but let’s call this 50/50. Half my poor imagination skills, half SJM throwing way too much at us at once.

I finished this book in a day and a half, and then immediately went to the store to pick up book two. So that should tell you what you need to know. I loved the dark edges of this book. The twists I genuinely did not expect, and it all at once felt like a story I had heard before and something entirely new.

The end was so fast past I was literally squirming on the couch with anxiety and excitement.

People get annoyed with SJM’s descriptions of her characters, and I truly don’t get it. She clearly has a type, and I’m glad she writes characters she loves because you can feel the love.

The giant caveat us that there is a #$% ton of cussing in this book.

If you can handle that, it's a twisty and fun urban fantasy with all the fantastical things you could want (angels, demons, fae, vampires, shape shifters of all.stripes) lots of emotion and dealing with grief and friendship and forgiveness.

I genuinely love this book.

I like other SJM books better but this was still entertaining. I have a few issues with the pacing and the start is tough to get through. But I was still hooked!
