Hellsing is a manga (Japanese graphic novel). This was the fist time I read a manga, so it took a little getting used to reading from back to front. The story was interesting, but tended to get rather heavy-handed with the religious stuff as it progressed. It was a fairly quick and easy read.
I sort of wanted to give this more of a three and half star rating but, damn you goodreads, I don't have that option. I've seen the first two OVAs (aka "Hellsing Ultimate") and have been intrigued if not totally impressed. This first volume, which corresponds with the first OVA, does its job well enough and is pretty much the script of the OVA, which makes sense. There are few extra things going on but stuff that I can see being cut for an hour long anime.
Anyway, I was supposed to be talking about the manga. I first must proclaim my love of Sir Integra. She is amazing and awesome and other things that are cool. Alucard is a perfect storm of a monster and Seras still pisses me right the hell off. She is far less annoying on the page than in the anime and I put that to the fact that I don't have to hear her speak.
The one thing that put me off here was the dialect writing for Father Anderson. Yeah it works alright in its place but for a visual medium it is certainly a pain in the ass to have to speak Anderson's lines aloud to understand what's going on. I'm not sure whether to blame the author or the translator for that.
Fairly solid introduction. Further judgement reserved until I read the other volumes.

Despite being thoroughly disappointed by revisiting the old anime, the manga (other than a few things, like "only virgins can become vampires" kind of missing the point of vampires in retrospect) is still pretty fun to read. Even if it's a take that's been copied all the hell and back since Hellsing, I still have fond memories of the early volumes and I hope that the later stuff doesn't let me down too hard.
Good. In many ways the ideas have been done before but that doesn't stop you enjoying it. The artwork employed uses different styles to create different effects . Some of the images would be great on their own.
