Love the strong, smart FMC. Love the witchery, strong and smart women, power of nature and vengeance topic. The addition of soul-searching from the MMC however was not my thing and a bit drawn out. The low points for the FMC, which definitely have their function as they give the fuel for the epic revenge feeling, were very intense and for me, too much to handle. Also animal abuse, making women less than men and injustice fueled by religious fanatism - is the exact combination to hit too hard. So while I recognize it had to be the fuel to create the contrast and relief felt in the parts where the story and luck turns for the better, I had a bad time reading those parts.

Pulpy, with a clunky plot. The setting was well-described and I enjoyed the early CT wilderness. Very disappointed in the ending that Abitha wholly gave over to evil and Samson was revealed as the Devil. It felt contradictory to the nuance set up at the beginning. In the end, the book gave into simplicity, relied on stereotypes and became a blood fest. Poorly designed story and lazy characters. Writing was not well crafted and too on the nose :( Despite the clunkiness, 1 star for the setting description and hope it conjured with the early set up. Too bad it didn’t reward

The first half was intriguing and I enjoyed the mystery as well as the commentary on religious community.

However, the second half becomes not only predictable
but also has a Native American shaman as the lurking "evil" character.
It seemed unnecessary to the story and was jarring to read, especially in combination with the portrayal of the Pequot characters.

The ending also felt very predictable but also unsatisfying.

Overall this was a read that started out interesting enough but was a disappointment.

Slewfoot isn't really, as the summary implies, about a "battle between pagan and puritan." Rather, it is about a young woman named Abitha, struggling against her evil brother-in-law and the puritan village that supports him. So just keep your expectations less "big religious war" and more "badass woman."

I really really enjoyed this book. It had elements of horror but was almost more of a thriller, with every page seeped in tension and suspense. I was captivated both by Abitha's battles against evil religious men and by Samson's pursuit of his true identity. And the way it all tied together in a fireball of rage and magic and creepy creatures... perfection.

If you like stories about weird forest monsters, feminine rage, and witches, you'll enjoy this one. I highly recommend it.
