Luke is a military career man who helps Harper, who breaks down in town, when both step in to save a woman. Since Harper needs a place to stay, she is roped into staying at Luke's place... if she will be his pretend girlfriend for a month.

Luke and Harper both are broken people for different reasons. Both made me cry at times. This small little town of Benevolence really bands together in times of trouble and peace. There are 2 adorable foster dogs that I loved. Two sets of people finding love with each other when they need it the most. There was so much laughter and so many tears and just beautiful themes that make the 400+ pages just fly by.

This emotional rollercoaster of unrequited love, fake dating, and military romance was both heartbreaking and beautiful. Luke Garrison, a captain in the Army National Guard, is haunted by the death of his pregnant wife, Karen, and believes he can never love again. Harper, who shakes up his carefully closed-off world, challenges that belief. Their connection begins with a fake relationship, where Harper stays with Luke to fend off his family's concerns before his deployment. The situation becomes even more intense when they share a one-bed arrangement. Despite Luke's insistence that he "can’t love anyone again," Harper falls for him deeply, though her love remains painfully one-sided for much of the story.

Luke’s emotional struggle is gut-wrenching, especially as he grapples with his feelings for Harper and his grief over Karen. His attempts to push Harper away lead to some of the most heart-wrenching moments. He tells her, “I can’t love you. I can’t love anyone again. But I want you,” and, “You’re only here because she’s gone. I can’t look at you without wishing she was here.” Their breakup, spurred by his deployment and inability to open his heart, is shattering. Harper’s strength and patience are tested as Luke struggles with his guilt and confusion. Yet, by the end, Luke realizes his love for Harper, delivering a tear-jerking confession: “I’m sorry for pushing you away. I’m sorry for hurting you on purpose. I was scared. Down to the bones. I felt things for you that I never thought would be possible to feel again and some things were completely new.” This story, filled with themes of military romance, boss/employee dynamics, and the pain of unrequited love, beautifully captures the journey of healing and second chances. Despite all the heartache, it’s a love story that hurts in all the best ways.

4.25⭐, 2.75 🌶️

I'm thinking, I'm thinking, I'm thinking. So much of this book I really enjoyed. It gave Dear John vibes with a insta attraction and short relationship period before the man is off for a long term military deployment. While the relationship is fun and both characters go through their trials and tribulations the love story was the main point. My only issue is that Luke dealing with his grief and Harper dealing with her past trauma both werent addressed as a pair, but both of them going through fighting that stuff individually (which I guess makes sense, but I would have enjoyed seeing them working together to heal their pasts).

Harper was a beautiful character and just wonderful. I loved her the whole book, and once you get his backstory, you understand Luke being the way he is.
