I struggled with this book. The FMC (Harper) is described as "barely controlled chaos" but I really think that's code for a "too stupid to function doormat" and the MMC (Luke) is just a hot and cold alphahole who gives very little and expects all. Ultimately I didn't see the chemistry and felt nothing for the main characters beyond annoyance. This book is awkward and cringe at times (they are basically together in a friends with benefits / fake relationship kind of set-up for a few weeks and then the MMC is deployed for 6 months and the FMC acts like she is his loyal wife waiting at home and goes through all his locked away stuff) but I liked the found family / small town aspect of the novel. There were a lot of unnecessary side plots that I don't feel needed to be there. Overall, I would not recommend this book.
SPOILER: I understand that grief is complicated and that the MMC is still in love with his dead wife, and I am sure it's super complicated dating again after such a tragedy. However, the MMC consistently doesn't talk, treats the FMC terribly (knowing her history, he is basically just cruel) and his behaviour is justified because he was honest in disclosing that he could never love her? He is beyond selfish and it's absolutely ridiculous that we're supposed to ship that. Their whole relationship was surface level. The MMC knowingly led the FMC on and she deserved better, and I personally don't think he atoned enough in that last 5% of the book to make up for his behaviour. In my opinion he should've had a long single life continuing to mourn his dead wife, as he was lucky to have such an epic love so early on.
TRIGGERS: Dead of parents, physical abuse, car accident, death (not on page), cheating spouse, dead pregnant ex-spouse, adoption, foster care, fire incident and war themes (side character looses limb).

I enjoyed the start of the book, but then the characters got so annoying, and the book felt about 150 pages too long.
