I loved the ending to this book. I almost threw my kindle across the room when he got sent to war, but it was the best (and probably most realistic) ending I could imagine.

I read the Author's Note at the end and appreciated this quote from Jon Mooallem, "Storytelling matters now. Emotion matters. Our imagination has become an ecological force".

Beautiful story of forgiveness, coming of age in the 1930s for a poor orphan and in fact a country that was in turmoil. The giraffes are the hope and serenity, pure souls that can save a life that is shattered. Wonderful story and I was completely invested throughout.

I was surprisingly captivated by this story. It's really sweet, but there's a current of something running underneath; elements of danger, hidden truths and the regret that comes from so many missed opportunities. I was drawn in by the framework of Woody telling his story at the end of his long life, as if getting the words down is all that matters to him.

The giraffes absolutely steal the show here, as they should. The story of their journey across the US is incredibly dramatic (I love that although the truth is probably far more mundane, it is a fictionalised version of something that actually happened). But it's just so wholesome, especially whenever one of the core characters has a moment with the giraffes that brings a complete sense of peace.

This book was captivating. I truly felt like I was on the journey west with the MC and the giraffes. I gritted my teeth when they were in danger and breathed a sigh of relief when they overcame each obstacle. Definitely a heartwarming story that's worth a read.
