Kirjan luettuani nukuin yön yli, enkä siltikään oikein tiedä mitä siitä ajattelisin. Se on sekä etäinen että intiimi, toiveikas mutta synkkä ja monella muullakin tapaa hyvin dualistinen.

Stephen Chbosky on ehkä paremmin tunnettu elokuvaohjaajana. Elämäni seinäruusuna on hänen ensimmäinen kirjansa, jonka elokuvasovituksen hän myös ohjasi. Elämäni on kirjeromaanin muodossa kerrottu kehitysromaani, joka käsittelee aikuistumista, perheen ja ystävien merkitystä, sekä nimenomaisesti “seinäruusuna” olemista ja ulkopuolisuuden kokemusta.

Elämäni seinäruusuna kertoo 15-vuotiaan Charlien elämästä yhden vuoden ajalta. Charlien ystävä Michael on tehnyt itsemurhan, ja jokin saa Charlien kirjoittamaan kirjeita tuntemattomalle “ystävälle”. Kirjeissä Charlie kuvailee elämäänsä ja hänelle tapahtuneita asioita. Charlie kertoo perheestään, ihmissuhteestaan erääseen opettajaan, yksinäisyydestään ja siitä, kun hän löytää tiensä kaveriporukkaan. Charlie kertoo alkoholista, huumeista ja toisten ihmisten ongelmista. Vaikka hän kertoo hyvin intiimeistä asioista, jotenkin hänen oma elämänsä tuntuu jäävän etäiseksi. Kirjan lopussa Charlie vihdoin kertoo mahdollisen syyn sille, miksi hän on “seinäruusu”.

Charlien hahmo jää tosiaan etäiseksi, mutta lopussa lukija saa käsityksen siitä, miksi Charlie on mieluummin ollut tarkkailijan roolissa. Vaikka Charlien suhde hänen sisaruksiinsa ja vanhempiinsa on välillä koetuksella, Charlien perhe vaikuttaa aidolta ja rakastavalta. Charlien ystävillä on omat ihmissuhdekiemuransa. Tärkeimpiä Charlien ystäviä ovat sisaruspari Sam ja Patrick. Kolmikon välinen ystävyys on elämänmakuista, sotkuista ja sydäntä lämmittävää.

Kirja on monimutkaisempi kuin itä päältäpäin näyttää, ja sen tapahtumissa on paljon sulateltavaa. Kuitenkin Elämäni seinäruusuna antaa vilauksen siitä, miten elämämme on monimutkainen verkko ihmissuhteita, joista jokaisen taustalla on omat vaikuttimensa ja menneisyyden painolastinsa. Kuten tämä kirjakin, elämä ja ihmissuhteet ovat sotkuisia, mutta on parempi osallistua elämään, kuin jäädä sivustakatsojaksi.

The book was underwhelming for me. This might be because I had watched the movie first but I felt like there was much left to desire at the end, maybe this was intentional but this book was a let down which is disappointing for such a hyped up book. There was also so much information for what in my opinion is a short book that felt unimportant in hindsight and didn't really add to to the story.

This is my full review, the paragraph following is just nitpicking: Everything about that boy is gay and autistic and it makes no sense that he isn't. That's it. That's my review. Thanks for reading.

Maybe it's me, maybe I missed something, maybe I gotta give it a reread but I feel like the childhood assault was placed in there randomly at the end. It didn't feel wrong, but it didn't feel right. Not like csa ever could, but there's a time and place, ideally, and this just didn't make as much sense narratively, especially that close to the end. I suppose one could argue real life is full of surprises and the book is supposed to depict that, but to that I say bullshit. Little moments here and there about his auntie, alright, but it's a very touchy subject and I don't think it got the respect and conversation it deserved. So, negative points.

I had trouble enjoying the format the book was written in. I get the idea, of Charlie sending letters to this unknown author as his way of coping. However, I am definitely not a fan of the first person point of view. Although the books syntax gets better as Charlie gets better at writing, it’s a little off putting to have to read a book where improper sentence structure is common. I loved the fact that the reader could see how Charlie was progressing and getting better at his English class just by the way he writes, but it was still a little annoying. I wish that the letters were only part of the story, instead of the story being told entirely through letters. 
The book is also incredibly slow. I understand that the reader is experiencing and learning just as Charlie is, but the amount of mundane detail that has no impact on the plot is excessive. I enjoyed getting to know and love the characters as Charlie did, but I think it could have been a little bit faster. 
I’m terms of the plot or meaning of the story, this book is tragic. Death, grief, depression, molesting, rape, just so much shit happens to this poor kid. As tragic as the book is, I feel that’s it’s fairly representative of what an actual kid his age may go through. Yeah, sure, not everyone goes through as much as Charlie did, but almost everyone does to some level. So I enjoyed the book for its realism and lessons, but disliked the format and pace.
