“you sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends” started crying 19 pages in, a new record! thought this was brilliant at capturing how fragile and finite life and a marriage can be and how the aftermath of a death of a partner can leave you feeling so powerless, like everything you’ve built has vanished in a day. this book isn’t just about grief but goes a step beyond, it’s the search for meaning, the childlike longing to change your circumstances simply by wishful thinking, acting irrationally, and waking up one day to find that the life you love has suddenly become alien to you. i really enjoyed the references in this book, the geology ones being amongst my favourite. i haven’t ever been in a loving and committed relationship (let alone marriage) and i don’t know how the ones who have experienced marital bereavement must feel about this book but i might have a hunch…

creo que ejemplifica perfectamente lo que es pasar por un duelo, aunque en momentos se me hizo pesado con la crónica de la enfermedad de su hija (muchos datos médicos)

I wasn’t to sure what to expect with this. I knew it was Didion’s most well known work and felt like it was a good place to start. I don’t always love stream of consciousness writing, and that certainly applied here. Some parts I found really moving, others I felt like she was circling over the same thought. I interpreted that partially as the chronic and unrelenting grief she was experiencing. Overall I thought the writing was great but felt like it could have gone deeper and kinda missed the mark for me!

This is more of a journal/stream of thought reflection, so I actually hate the idea of putting a star rating on it - I’ll say 4. It’s a beautiful tribute to her husband and a raw insight into someone’s own grief and love.
