not super familiar with the true story of the donner party (and decided to save learning the facts until i finished this book) so can't speak to the historical accuracy and i'm not sure if the repeated
incest
was fact or fiction. if fiction, then it was unnecessary and a bit weird to include.

this book was fine, a decent read. i found it very readable, i was invested in some of the characters' stories, but the ending of the book really let me down, i felt that it could've spent longer in that last section as things broke down completely and they were trapped in the snow and committing
cannibalism
and we never found out what happened to some characters!!! why did we follow mary graves and edwin bryant only to never find out what happened to them? i appreciate the emotional ending, but what happened to keseberg? if these characters died or something i would be happy to know that, it's just very unsatisfying to have followed them throughout the story but not find out whether they survived in the end.

Well written but, through no fault of the book's, I realized I just don't want to read about pilgrims.
Went about as well as I thought it would.

This book was very scary, and at times very gross. The gore is really well done and descriptive in a way that does not confuse the work with one of extreme horror. I loved the fast pace of the book which was necessary with so many different character perspectives being offered.
That being said, the number of perspectives could be hard to follow at times. Not all of this was due to the writing (like every other dude was named John back then), but some changing of names may have helped with clarity. This confusion of characters also made the ending less powerful for me - I couldn’t remember if one of my favorite characters had lived or not, as their story wrapped up well before the other perspectives given towards the end of the book. The other thing that I didn’t like was the incest. This might be a silly line to draw, but the first instance felt jarring enough that the second one felt excessive.
