September has been a bit of a struggle reading-wise because of many different things, time, energy to read, etc. But also starting this book. She's chonkier than she looks and it's quite a bit of world building to get through which for me is quite difficult to get through BUT MAN OH MAN THE PAY OFF.
The last 200 or so pages were SO thrilling and tension filled and all the world building were pieces of a puzzle that suddenly all clicked into place. It was so incredibly well done. Slowly but surely the full picture started to form and while the big reveal at the end wasn't the biggest surprise for me, it was the build up to it and all the smaller twists and turns that made it such an epic climax for me.
But most importantly, I think the excellence of how race (and gender) slots into this story as an integral part of the overall plot. Bree goes on a journey of such profound self discovery that is rooted in black history overall, but her also getting in touch with her ancestors and learning about her family history and how this all connects together was expertly executed.
I had only heard raving reviews on this book, and at first I couldn't understand why. But having finished it, I know am one of the raving reviews. Read this.

(PS just wanna have it on record that I hope this will be a love triangle and not a love angle. It's not impossible I would say)

I will be honest. I read the first half and a predictable thing I expected had already transpired so I wasn’t terribly invested, and then my Libby loan expired. I skipped my loan a few times and then it came back up a few days ago when I was in exactly the mood to read it while recovering from COVID and let me tell you… I did not put it down until I was done and promptly jumped to book two when I finished.

I know enough about Arthurian legend to understand what’s going on, but I wouldn’t say I’m typically drawn to these stories, which is a testament to the author’s skill at storytelling. Sure, there were some predictable bits… it’s a YA novel and I expect this… but there were also some things I didn’t see coming and some different story elements in terms of both magic and the interweaving of power, elitism, and racism that were deftly woven. By the end of the noon I was already fully invested, and then when I read the author’s notes I retroactively had an even deeper appreciation for the work.

Loved the narration though I had to speed it up a bit.

The story captivated me but sometimes it made me put it away. Loved the magic systems introduced in this story. Bree's grief struck a personal cord of mine. And it made it difficult to read sometimes. Anyway, the plot twists didn't really feel like twists? But it still surprised me 🤭

Sometimes I thought if I was really reading YA.

But it was good. I would've given it five stars.

But the idea of Sel and Bree together nauseates me. Considering how abusive he was at the beginning. And everything changes because what? A connection between king and merlin? lol hell nah.

Bree's story covers so much in terms of family history, history, grief, power, friendship, and self discovery. It is very well written in some respects - a modern-world YA fantasy with links to Black history, world history, mythology and folklore. The worldbuilding, mythology and magic systems are well-researched and well-written, and it even includes Cymraeg (Welsh) words and phrases (which, as a Cymraes, I absolutely ADORED).

My only gripe is that at times things felt a little rushed or poorly explained compared to the rest of the story. Patricia would massively overstep at times which was uncomfortable. And even the romance was rushed given that they'd known each other for what, 3 days? Also the fact that Bree is 16 and everyone else is like 18+.

However, this is perhaps the best YA book I have read in a long while. And I need the sequel immediately.

I really liked this book. Bree is a fantastic lead character. The 16-year-old-in-college-with-wisdom-beyond-her-years-because-her-mother-died took me a bit of time, but then I got into the book and let that go. The beginning of the story is eerily similar to Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones. However, Bree still has her supportive dad, she has a therapist trying to connect her to her mom’s people and she has a whole depth to her grief that grounds her as a character. She’s not a complete Mary Sue character for much of the book. She does have an odd set of skills that make it dangerous to be her. The mystery keeps the plot moving. The romance triangle is not my thing so I can’t give this book 5 stars. I’m also not clear on how old Nick and Sel are? It might be gross. I only guessed 1/3 of the twists in the end of the book. Do not click on spoilers if you haven’t read the book!!!
I guessed that Bree would be officially legendborn through rape. I did not guess that she would be of Arthur’s line. I also did not guess that it was Nick’s dad who was opening the demon gates.

I love a book when I can’t see all of the twists coming from a mile away!

Omg I literally binged this book! It was kinda slow and hard to understand ( for me) the first 130 pages, but the rest was so gripping. I still probably don’t understand everything about the world building, but that’s cause I had no clue what happened in the Arthurian legend 🥲 Anyway, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t either, cause the plot and the relationships are amazing, the grieving process is realistic and well-written. The diversity of legendborn is pretty good as well, with both race, disabilities and lgbtq+🫶🏻
 P. S. The banter between some characters got me giggling for real👀
