Faith: Taking Flight by Julie Murphy

After reading the Renegades trilogy by Marissa Meyers, I was wanting another superhero type book. I LOVED the Renegades trilogy so maybe that’s why I couldn’t get into this one. I got this one in a $3 mystery bag that contained 10 teen sci fi retired library books. The cover drew me to it once I saw it in the bag but there was just something about it that I just wasn’t vibing with by the end of chapter 1. I’ve decided to try to give it away or I’ll try to redonate it to the sale that I got it from originally so that it’ll hopefully get in the hands of someone who’ll enjoy it.

Many trigger warnings! I love that this is a story about a fat girl who can fly and uses her ability to help people! This book is not for the faint of heart or homophobic (yay for LGB characters!). The story includes abductions (at the very beginning of the story), non-consensual scientific experimentation, violence against pets and people, death of parents (in the past), dementia, and more. Most of that is introduced in the first half of the book! Things come together in the end, though. I'm just amazed at what's in a YA novel these days!

I appreciated this young adult novel as it featured a plus-sized main female character. Faith learns that she has superhero powers and uses them for good. A few good one-liners including “Ginormous gravity defying boobs”. The plot line was okay.

This was a little too YA for me personally. The story kept taking turn after turn without a lot of substance to each change.

Adorable story! The "origin" bits of Faith's superpower left a little to be desired, but I'd love to spend all my time hanging out (i.e., reading about) Faith, ability to fly or no.
