Alice thinks she is happily in love with her husband.  They are both excited about her first pregnancy.  In reality, she is the mother of 3 and she is getting a divorce.  Alice has amnesia due to a head injury.  She has no memory of the last 10 years. As Alice tries to piece together memories, she needs to navigate lthe life of the stranger she has become.  Her journey has her looking at things in a different light.

Reading it will make you stop and think about how you've changed and what your younger self would think about where you are now.

There is a sub-story that  really resonated with me.  Alice's amnesia has her reconnecting with her sister, Elizabeth.  The story of Elizabeth is expertly woven in as she journals her thoughts and feelings for her psychiatrist.  Elizabeth's story is one of infertility- failed IVF and miscarriages.  Each loss is another heart break.  There is a scene where Elizabeth goes to the hospital to meet and hold her new nephew only days after a miscarriage. She explains the pain of it so well.

This is a definite must read.  If you are struggling with infertility, you will be able to identify with Elizabeth and everything she goes through but the main story, Alice and her memory, will keep it to very manageable pieces.

This was an incredibly compelling story and the entire time I expected there to be this huge twist as to how her life had changed so much, but it turns out that its more the normal little everyday changes that cause us to become new people. It made me think a lot about how much our experiences shape us.

I loved this story and it made me think a lot about aging and relationships in my life. I read it because it was on a list of books everyone should read and I agree. My favorite read of the year so far.
