I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book. I'm not even quite sure why I picked up the book as I've always embraced my curls. The information provided is stuff my hairdresser told me years ago to take care of my hair, and some of the advice is wrong for my hair (I need a diffuser to make maximum curl, but the author is against them except in certain conditions). The anecdotes are nice, but they give the impression that everyone's life sucked while they fought their curls, and then miraculously, through embracing one's curls, all their problems went away and they live the perfect life.
I'm sure if I looked, I could find this information on the internet for free. As it was, I only paid $1.99 for the Kindle edition, so I'm not out a ton of money.

Reads a bit like a curly hair religion and my rating may change based on whether or not this process actually works with my hair (it's only been a day, so we'll see!), but contains a lot of interesting details... very instructive and the facts are formulated in a way that really makes sense. One thing I really enjoyed were the testimonials from other curly haired people and what they'd been through. There's a section on taking care of a curly haired child that I thought was great for those who have straight hair and may not to know what to do with it.
ETA: As of 6/11/12 I've been doing the "method" and I've noted an improved in my hair so much so that I've not only been wearing it curly all the time, but down. This is huge for me. Still leaving the book at 4 not 5 stars, because if I feel like straightening my hair again, I will not feel guilty about it. So officially about 4.5. Great reference book for curly haired individuals.

The Basics
This is a good jumping point for my new journey but will definitely have to experiment to figure out what really works for me.

I'm giving this 3 stars rather than 2 because, although some of the writing was silly, I like the recipes included for homemade hair treatments and I appreciated the step-by-step instructions and photos for how to co-wash, etc. -- much of which I've learned from other sources and from trial-and-error, but it was nice to have it so clearly set out for me to see.

Not worth a purchase. Just look up the curly girl method online. The writing is super cringey and the whole “the world is against us who have curly hair” got old. But I do appreciate everything the author has done in terms of advancing knowledge about how to take care of curly hair. You just don’t need a book.

I have more waves than curls, but I appreciated this book's advice. I tried washing my hair once a week, as advised, for a couple weeks and barely made it, but I'm happy with every other day now. I also use less shampoo, and go for the shampoos without sulfates. My hair and scalp definitely seem less dry. Also, chapter 5, "Products and Home Remedies," includes some great recipes I'd like to try.

I was hoping this book would be more along the lines of little helpful hints for handling, cutting and styling hair. This is in there, but it's maybe 1/4 of the book. Most of the book reads like a self help book: Cast off the shackles of straight hair and love yourself! I realize that we as women put a lot of time and effort into our hair and how it does or doesn't look can definitely hurt or help the self-esteem but holy crap this book made me feel super mentally stable!
This book may also not be aimed at me, rather people who straighten their curly hair and have never tried to manage it on their own. At least the first half of the book is just a repeat of the following "rules": quit using harsh shampoos, quit straightening your hair, condition/moisturize your hair and quit dragging the curl out of it with constant brushing. Apparently I am some type of curly hair prodigy because I managed to figure this out in high school. This seems to be most of what Lorraine teaches people, based on this book, so that was a pretty useless chunk of the book. I thought this was common sense for managing your hair that most girls figured out in teenage years of experimenting. Apparently I was ahead of the curve.
The hair cutting area is a disappointment as well. Basically you learn where to cut in the curl and to use sharp scissors. I was hoping for something a little more involved to tame my messy, thick hair. Mostly I learned I need to move somewhere with a population large enough to support hair studios that do more than straighten and dye hair all day long. There are some fun styles in the book that I may go back to in the future but overall this book was a repetitive line of very basic hair care.
I'm giving it a three because maybe it really will be helpful to some people and maybe some people need this "coming out" for their hair. I am just not that person. For me it was overall a lot of writing for not a lot of learning.
