A great read. People call it Franzenesque, but I just like the interesting character development.

This is a really good book about a group of friends who meet at a summer arts camp in the seventies and how they grow up and deal with their creativity and fitting it into their lives in the real world. As a drama school/children's theatre kid, it resonated a lot with me.

There is a palpable nostalgia that draws the reader inward about their own friendships and its beginnings. I was enthralled with the crafted delivery of these friendships over the decades. The accounts appear seamless, except for Jonah's character. As interesting as his story is, for some reason it comes across as forced; therefore, I do not connect with him the way I did Jules, Dennis, Ethan and Ash.

In many respects, The Interestings remind me of the film, The Big Chill.

I had high hopes because of the good reviews, but I found this book to be incredibly boring. For me, the characters were drab, the writing was long-winded, and the plot was nonexistent.

I always struggled to read this book but listening cracked it wide open. Is there such thing as a friendship saga? This is that.

3.5. Wolitzer doesn't know how to end books.
