To me, this book was a story of an older sister trying to make sense of the murder of her younger sister. Not necessarily to solve it, but to reclaim her sister's life, her sister's experiences in the last few years of her life. She brilliantly orchestrates the story of her sister's life through her sister's own documents: scribbled notes on metro cards, letters both sent and unsent, asides in lecture notes. As a reader, I felt the excruciating ache of a family grieving, pleading, and begging for answers, the anger at the injustice, and a desire to prevent more violence like Liliana experienced. A breathtaking and heart wrenching memoir from those left in the wake of femicide.

Creí que este libro me iba a romper, que iba a llorar a mares, especialmente por el miedo que me da el futuro que les depara a mis hijas. Pero, si bien me dolió hasta el alma, me dejó un sentido de justicia y hermandad que no había experimentado. Me encantó el formato del libro, cómo conocimos a Liliana, a su familia, sus amigos y esa relación que le quitó la vida. Todos tenemos que tener los ojos abiertos para detectar esas relaciones tóxicas que se pueden volver fatídicas y este libro arroja una nueva luz sobre ellas. Lo recomiendo amoliamente! Una lectura incomoda pero bellamente escrita y muy necesaria.

Oof, this was a beautifully written, touching and loving portrait of Liliana. At first, it felt very weird to dive into her personal notes and letters, but I understand the authors choice to do this and eventually I did feel it was handled with care. Liliana had such immense emotional intelligence at such a young age, I was impressed by how she made sense of the world around her and her relationships. She left such a mark on the people in her life, even if some of them didn’t deserve her. Christina Rivera Garza brought her sister back alive through these pages and above anything that is just heartbreaking.
