This was an interesting story. I really enjoyed the world and the tech aspect of it as well as the dystopian feel. Ryder and Sil were really fun characters but I wasn't very invested in them being together. They were good together but I hoped the book would focus more on the plot and not the romance between them. I think it would have been better if they had a slowburn romance instead of one that happened... kind of fast in my opinion. (I also put body horror as a trigger warning because... in the story she kind of body hops with technology).

The main reason I picked this up is because someone mentioned on TikTok that if you liked Black Widow, you'll like this book. And I definitely see the connection! The main corporation they're fighting feels a little like the Red Room with mind control, being sent out on missions, etc. And you can see the Marvel influences throughout, which is always fun for Marvel fans!

I do think some of the world building could have been fleshed out a little more, as they kept referencing laws and things that weren't quite clear to me. Weaving in a little more background about how Syntex first started might have also helped with the overall clarity of the world.

The romance also didn't work for me, as I didn't really feel much connection between Sil and Ryder. It felt like it was just there because romance is expected, but it wasn't necessary for the plot.

All in all, an action packed book for sure that just had a few flaws.

This is a pacy, fun read which can be enjoyed on different levels - either just as an energetic and distracting sci-fi, or by engaging a little more deeply with the themes of corporate power and technology ethics in a dystopia setting. The characters can sometimes feel a little weak, and the backstory for both them and the world can be a little underdeveloped at times - for example, at the start of the book, the main character dwells on her broken relationship with her father a lot, but never meets him within the plot to actually resolve this, so resolution happens by proxy in meeting another character. The choreography of fast-moving scenes (especially fights and infiltrations - extractions are very well written!) can sometimes be a bit lacking in cohesion, but not significantly enough to cause damage to the very forward-moving energy of the overall story.
