This book felt very much like a bridge book. Not a ton happened to progress the story despite the length. Most of the plot progression takes place in the last 30 to 50 pages, with the rest of the book dragging a bit. I switched back and forth between the audiobook version and the Kindle version at first, but found my mind wandering too much to finish the audiobook.

The romance was good but now that the tension isn't really there, it wasn't enough to really hold you. There is more spice in this book than the others (and pretty good spice at that), but I got pretty bored with it (which is normal for me when there isn't anymore tension). The other developing romances are far more interesting and I'm excited to see more of those!

Raina also annoys me a lot from time to time and spends way more of the book in her head than I like.

it took me a little bit to get into it, but I feel like it lived up to the first book by the end

Charissa Weaks is a go-to author for me. And City of Ruin (book 2 in The Witch Collector series) is by far one of my favorite reads of 2023. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The world building is top-notch. I love how detailed and distinct it is. It provides the perfect world to escape into when you do not want to deal with your own reality.

The characters are stunning. I love how rich Weaks makes their backstories and how all their stories are woven together. Plus, I love that Weaks included a character who identifies as they/them (and that the world itself is so inclusive).

The plot line. This one had me in a chokehold from start to finish. The fucking rollercoaster ride that is this book will make you laugh, cry, and rage (on repeat).

The spice. Ooh, Weaks can write a spicy scene.
