Absolutely love Scarlett St. Clair’s writing style! This book was hard to put down, and for it being my first vampire romance novel? I’m OBSESSED!

I was gonna give this 4 stars, but the fact that i just finished it a couple of hours ago and I already feel like i forgot most of it might be a sign of something. (or maybe i have awful memory)
Either way, this gave me From Blood And Ash vibes at the beginning but I appreciated that it wasnt as overly crowded with sex scenes as FBAA, so it still kept me engaged with the plot. That being said I felt like we could've gotten a lot more from this book as its a medium pace and its just basically setting up the plot for the next books. I think the twist could've also been a lot "juicier" if it hadn't dragged out as much.
Anyways, i found it entertaining and engaging and of course the ending is basically incomplete to be able to continue the story in the next one. It has romance, magic, court politics, ✨spice✨, vampires, monsters, betrayals, etc, all that stuff.
I'll consider reading the second one 👍

Did I decide to give this author another chance because someone said that the love interest was basically Alucard from Castlevania? Yes. I absolutely did. And I ate it up!!! The story captured my attention. The characters were very entertaining. I liked the world and all the creepy monsters. I really hope we get to learn more about the monsters, goddesses, and countries in this world. Maybe even visit some new places in the next book!!

Now was this groundbreaking literature? Not really. The writing was simple. The plot was predictable. Some important moments of plot/character development were definitely glossed over in favor of the horny moments. It got to the point near the end where I genuinely was like “I appreciate and understand that you are horny for each other, but can we PLEASE discuss what is going on for more than five seconds??!!!” I think I got too invested in the plot and world building for a horny vampire book lmao.

Overall, I had a good time reading this. Isolde is a violent girlboss and we love that for her. Adrian is a classic emo vampire with a tragic past. It’s just a good time. There is mystery, betrayal, magic, and LOTS of stabbing. What more could you ask for?!

The first 1/4 was a bit meh, and while the story is predictable - I very much enjoyed reading it. The characters are morally gray and far from virtuous but it was refreshing to read. Looking forward to continuing the series.

This book was great fun! Very steamy vampire romance set in a fantasy world. Main character, Isolde, chafes at the misogynistic confines of her war torn land. She doesn’t expect that she the enemy will free her.
