This is a perfect novella for beginning chapter book readers. The story is told from the point of view of AJ a second grader who hates school. Will his new teacher be able to change his mind? What if she hate school just as much and can't do arithmetic or read? The school is full of wacky grownups who encourage the students to learn in new ways.

Two Stars - It was Okay

My son and I read the Halloween special of this series and he really liked it. So, I thought I would read the first book in the series with him. It's hard to find books that interest him right now. But, this one falls short of what I would expect for a young reader.

I don't like the negative attitude toward school. I mean, I'm trying to get him to enjoy school as is and this isn't going to help. But I turned it into a positive by taking advantage of a teaching moment. It gave us something to talk about and showed him how the negative attitude is unhelpful. Luckily the main character does start to see school in a new light towards the end.

I did like how Miss Daisy goes about teaching in a backward way by pretending to not know anything. My son thought this was funny because he could see the ploy and that made him feel very smart.

So, it was okay, but I think I'm going to start searching for a new series that can teach my son something more positive and educational.

AJ is in second grade with Miss Daisy. Miss Daisy doesn't seem to know anything that she should to be a teacher, so AJ thinks she's crazy. Throughout the book he tells about the different things she doesn't know and how the class needs to help her learn them. (Is she tricking them, or does she really not know?) Principal Klutz also challenges the students to read one million pages so they can rent the school for a night and turn it in to a video game arcade - can they meet the challenge?

The My Weird School series is full of laughs and insight in the mind of AJ. This is a fun read aloud for intermediate grades.

Miss Daisy convinces her second graders that she can't read, doesn't know anything about social studies, and can't do arithmetic to trick her students into loving being at school. Also a fan of the character A.J. who can never understand why everyone laughs "even though I didn't say anything funny" and feels so terrible for his illiterate teacher :)

I think students would really get a kick out of this book.

Very cute read as a teacher, seeing the different strategies Miss Daisy uses with the students. I would be hesitant to share it with kids because of the uses of stupid and dumb, and the view point of hating school, but for the right kid it could be a hit

Miss Daisy is really crazy, I bet she'd sing the alphabet like "a, x d, w, y, z banana, jelly, bread, a, m, n, c, a, w, c!" She doesn't know anything about school and she is a teacher.
And she wants to sit on the couch eating bon-bons and watching TV.
And they made it to a million pages and got to have the school be a video arcade for the weekend!

Poc narrator, quick easy read about the teachers acting dumb to inspire the kids to learn. Cute.

My daughter and I are enjoying thus series. Although, I cringe every time the word "dumb" is used as I'm trying to not encourage the use of the word. Other than that, the story was cute and we're looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
