I just read a book about video games and was truly enthralled. 5 stars for that alone!

Too nerdy for me. Not the worst book ever, but the 80s got to be a bit much by the end and it became more and more like a super nerdy guy's fantasy.

And the only reason i give 5 stars is because there isn't an 11 star option. If you are into (or even just generally appreciate) video games, MMOs, RPGs, and all that fun stuff, this is an awesome story. If you like dystopian, this is an awesome story. if you like epic battles, quick-thinking and intelligent characters, this is an awesome story. if you like action, adventure, a little romance, this is an awesome story. you see where I'm going? go in just about any direction with this book and you will run into awesome.

I watched and loved the movie first, so I was excited to read the book. It was incredible in an entirely different way. I’m amazed at how well they made the movie without actually copying everything in the book. For the first time ever, I loved the book AND it’s movie, but still loved the book even more.

i really wanted to enjoy this but ultimately ended up being disappointed. about halfway through i started to get annoyed with all of the 80s info dumps. WE GET IT, THE 80S. the main protagonist, wade, was unlikable and for most of the story, acted like an elitist asshole and the dude had some seriously unhealthy obsessions. some of the "plot twists" seemed like they were just there for convenience sake and the romance in here... not it. i had a hard time picking this book back up.

cw: transphobia
This book was okay, if predictable. I was disappointed to learn however that Ernest Cline chose to include casual transphobia in his vision of the world in the year 2044. See page 173: "Now, spill it. Are you a woman? And by that I mean are you a human female who has never had a sex-change operation?" Also, I'd hoped there would be a triumphal moment where Aech, who had to pretend to be a straight white male to be successful would be able to actually reveal herself as a queer black woman to the world. Alas, there was no such catharsis. It kind of made it feel like that whole plot point was pointless.
