A well-crafted book with relatable characters & an interesting take on zombies. I loved the plot twist & definitely didn't see it coming.

The rise of the Senator's popularity really hits different in late August 2024, when the nation has spent the last weeks drooling over the wholesomeness of VP candidate Tim Walz. Especially as a Minnesotan myself, I very much recognize that if I'd read this book even 3 months ago, I would have found Ryman's charm & sincerity unbelievable. Who, with a personality & track record like that, would run for *President*? But now, I really get it. It actually feels believable.

I'm very excited to keep reading the series
even though Georgia & Buffy are no longer part of the narrative. I really liked Georgia. Her death really hurt.

2016: Second read through, pretty much as good as I remember it. I found some of the characters to be a bit annoying at times. Oh well, I am mainly looking forward to re reading deadline (book 2).

2011: I was a little disappointed when I realised that this is not your traditional zombie novel. It turned out to be very different from the books I normally read. But saying this I did enjoy it. The characters sucked me in. I just had to know what was going to happen to them. When I wasn't reading this book I was constantly thinking about it and the characters.

I guess I wanted more Zombie action and less political/journalist stuff, but it was great to read about the after facts of a zombie outbreak and how would the country survive and rebuilt. (Something I do often think about) I am totally going to read the next one. There is definitely more that can be told in the universe that has been created. Oh and also I really enjoyed the blog entries. They added such an emotional element to the story and I actually think there could have been more.

This was such an amazing book - a dystopian post-apocalyptic zombie novel, which focuses on the effects of an enormous viral outbreak. (I really loved Mira Grant's viral explanation for the zombies). Georgia and Shaun are a brother and sister journalism/blogger team, who get a spot following a presidential campaign. There are various attacks on the campaign trail, and basically, shit gets real. This is such an incredibly tense, fast moving book - I think I was gritting my teeth most of the time from the sheer tension of it all, and then towards the end to stop myself crying. I cannot wait for the second book in the trilogy - and to see Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire) speak at AussieCon4.

Compulsively readable, especially the last third or so, which is completely unputdownable and coaxed the extra star out of me.

I really enjoyed this book, from start to finish. The pacing was spot on, the characters engaging and believable, and the dialog was smart and sassy. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll blow off a good nights sleep flipping pages until you're done. Love it.
