ain't no way I read like 500 pages of this just for this grown man to kiss the teenager I am so done. i can sort of recognize why and it's meaning but was it really necessary?

This story follows Sora Itoda who is a high school student and an aspiring painter as he navigates his way through high school. Itoda is crushing hard on his guy friend and he doesn't know how to handle that. He confides in his childhood friend, Nao, that he is gay and she promises to keep his secret until he's ready to come out. While Itoda is struggling with being gay he meets Mr. Amamiya who owns a cafe and is openly gay. Nao and Itoda both befriend Mr. Amamiya and as their friendship grows Itoda becomes more confident in who he is.
This was such a fantastic manga! I enjoyed every minute of it. If you are a fan of Gengoroh Tagame's other works then you will definitely like this one.

Our Colors is a standalone manga by Gengoroh Tagame, the author of My Brother's Husband. In this story, high schooler Sora finds refuge in Mr. Amamiya's cafe after finding out the older man is gay, too.
I love that Sora got his support system throughout the book, but almost every time he came out, it was somewhat forced by the situation he was in. There were a lot of secrets going on between the three main characters — Sora's sexuality, Nao's crush on/friendship with Sora, Mr. Amamiya's past — and almost all of these were revealed involuntarily through other characters or by accident. In addition, I'm not sure what to feel about the ending.
I don't often read mangas, but I did enjoy Our Colors.
content warnings: homophobia (including internalized homophobia), accusations of pedophilia

I’m tired of queer stories where fully grown adults are being intimate with young people. I understand why it happens in this story, and it’s not the worst. But im just over it.

Like a lot of other folks here, I don’t really know how to rate this one. The real kicker is that I was all-in on giving this high praise until the last few pages. It’s one of those deals.
Here’s the good: Tagame’s art is exquisite. I love the way he draws his characters and puts so much emphasis on masculinity. I can’t really eloquently describe it other than that it’s art that ‘feels’ gay in the best way possible.
Another good thing: everything between the gay male lead and the girl childhood friend was done really well. I always love seeing healthy, supportive friendships with that undercurrent of occasional bumpy conflicts.
Until the last few pages, I really liked the mentor character, and it pains me that I have to refrain from recommending this one to people because of the ending. Considering everything that comes before it, it just doesn’t sit right with me.
(also, other commenters are right about the premise being flawed from the get-go: this takes place in a year with smartphones. I feel like there could have been more done with that? Better yet, have this take place in the early 2000s. It already feels like it does based on how the characters talk/act)
