I'm a sucker for the work of Gengoroh Tagame, but usually not on the safe side. Now i have read both My Brother's Husband and Our Colors i can say i admire his more tame work too. It's endearing in it's facial expressions and scene setting. With some great scenery mixed in between the conversations.

Originally serialized in a magazine called Monthly Action and later collected in three volumes. Our Colors is actually Tagame's second manga for general audiences. The series follows Sora Itoda, a closeted second-year high school student who meets an older man who runs a new cafe and learns that he is also gay. They form a bond as the man gives Sora advice on his problems.

It's a generally positive story. Sora deals with being gay, comes out to his best friend and eventually his parents and starts to open more. And i think through it all Sora remained especially strong. Especially with all the doubts and fears you have at that age being closeted. But that's the point of the story.

The kiss at the end took me a bit by surprise and i know some people might have interpreted it the wrong way. But i get it. Who knows who i kissed at that age, and i probably would have done the same.

I really enjoyed this manga. It perfectly captures the mix of emotions that comes from coming-out. I feel like it was realistic and wasn't overtly dramatic and doom and gloom for the sake of it, like a lot of coming out stories can tend to be.

I do wish it was a bit longer. I wanted a more of the mural, and for the some parts to be expanded on.

All in all a well told story with great artwork from the author of my favourite manga of all time [b:My Brother's Husband, Volume 1|32337897|My Brother's Husband, Volume 1 (Otouto no Otto, #1-2)|Gengoroh Tagame|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1657572678l/32337897._SX50_.jpg|57939385](+vol 2).

Our Colors by [a:Gengoroh Tagame|4599966|Gengoroh Tagame|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1416953405p2/4599966.jpg] follows Sora Itoda, a gay guy in high school as he struggles with keeping his sexuality a secret. His best friend Nao, who everyone assumes he's dating because she's a girl. And Mr. Amamiya, an owner of a local cafe who lives openly as a gay man.

SpoilerSora's anxiety about coming out is very relatable. Tagame did a great job with how real he made the story feel. Our main character's gradual coming out; first to Mr. Amamiya, who he admires and views as brave. And then to his best friend as his confidance grows. I really appreaciate that his parents were accepting, but it was nuanced and didn't feel idealized.

4.5 stars, rounding up. Really liked My Brother's Husband and enjoyed this a lot too. Will be looking to read more by Tagame.
