"1979. I didn't have any lovers, much less gay friends. No adults around me to whom I could come out. Depictions of gay people onscreen were of cross-dressing serial killers, and i was not a pretty boy the likes of whom you might see in manga. And yet I knew I was gay. This is for that 15-year-old 42 years ago."

Our Colors is the story of a boy with the soul of an artist, his childhood best friend, the boy he has a crush on, the first gay man he ever meets in his entire 15 years, and the tale of a teen's first coming out.

I think this is an important work for both those who may not have the support they deserve even in 2022, those who mourned the support they never had, and those who may not understand what it's like to feel alone.

Once again a wholesome story from Tagame that may trick readers into believing he ONLY does wholesome work while the reality is far outside that-- not a bad thing! Great that a storyteller can be so varied.

I was excited about the concept of a queer story that also involved synesthesia, and I wanted more color in the images to reflect that. Also, I’m not the biggest fan of Tagame’s art, and parts of the translation felt a bit outdated.
The kiss between Sora and Mr. Amamiya seemed unnecessary and bothered me a lot.

I really enjoyed getting to read this coming-of-age story detailing a certain point on Sora’s life. It seems like a lot of people weren’t very impressed by the length of this graphic novel and how repetitive it seemed, but I really enjoyed the almost mundane nature of it. Personally, I don’t really think you need a lot of exciting events to happen in order for a story to be good. This contemporary graphic novel really highlights how the daily lives of people can be both impactful but also very calm and simple. And I really appreciated the simplicity of Sora navigating his sexuality and coming to terms with what he felt internally and how that helped him process the relationships he developed with those around him. There were a lot of really great lessons in this story about love, regret, deceit, and acceptance. I haven’t read the author’s other works, but I’m really looking forward to reading them after finishing this one.

I liked this more than I thought I would for a book I picked up on a whim at the local library. The art is engaging and the story is just fantastic. I was worried that it might venture into illicit relationship between a teenager and an adult, but didn't need to worry. Loved how the main character developed throughout the book, but also liked how his friends/acquaintances also grew and developed, even though the story takes place over only a few months.
