Idk why everyone says this is mid, I really liked it lol. Short and sweet stories that are gross and funny.

It's really well told horror, and I especially liked the afterword, but something about Junji Ito's work just rubs me up the wrong way. Not in a way that's inherent to the horror, I mean. By mainstream manga standards it's brilliant, but the ways women suffer differently from men in his stories irritates me. It makes the characters feel too much like archetypes for me to ever connect with them, I just see his pretty young women suffering stoically and disproportionately and shut off.
It really isn't a huge deal, especially compared to other manga I read and like, so it's probably just a combo of that and something I can't quite name about his style that makes these horrors not Quite work for me. It's maybe how disjointed the events feel? Compelling body horror happens, but it never seems to be saying much or be caused by much, and the randomness and surreality makes me start looking deeper at the text than I might otherwise. This is like half criticism, half personal taste, though, hence four stars. Of the books of his I've read so far, this was by far both the best and the creepiest, so I might keep trying, just because so many people love his work.

I just went into this on a whim, but I actually really liked it. The main story did get really repetitive though, so that's the only downfall.
Graphic: Death, Violence, and Death of parent
Moderate: Child abuse and Child death
