This was better than the movie.
I know, that isn't saying much, is it? But really, it adds so much background and explanation that it actually makes the ridiculous plot kind of believable and interesting. It's very worth a read, simply because it salvages the movie.

A very nice novelization of a good movie. It was very interesting to find out more background information about the characters (some of which certainly helped fill out some plot holes) and the book also aged rather well, which is nice as that is often not the case. And a happy ending with our favorite trio is always a winner!

Review 13 - Star Trek V The Final Frontier by J.M. Dillard
I will be honest The Final Frontier is my least favourite Star Trek film and I was hoping that this book would be better than the film.
I was pleasantly surprised and found that the book was more enjoyable as it revealed more back story that the film did not.
I enjoyed the book as there was a lot of humour in the book and I could almost hear the actor's voices narrating their characters.
I will definitely reread this book as part of an eventual reread of all of the Star Trek film novelisations.

Probably my least favourite book of the Star Trek movie series so far. I did not like the movie that much and the book even less so.

I'm not a big fan of the clichéd assertion that "the book is always better," but in this case it is thankfully true. Dillard's writing makes up and corrects for just about all of the source movie's copious flaws. I was also impressed by the many subtle references to earlier novelizations, which made this book feel like it belonged with them. Though perhaps not quite up to Vonda McIntyre's work on previous installments, it manages a very close second, and stands alongside them as a quality novel and a worthy entry in the canon.

A wonderful way to relive the movie. It answers questions such as 'how did they get through the Great Barrier?' and focuses very much on the unshakeable bond between Kirk, Spock and McCoy.
