It took me a while to really get into this book because the beginning was so slow-paced for me. However, I persevered and I'm happy I did. Minus 1 star because I hate cliffhangers (lol, who doesn't) and something about the characters just wasn't clicking for me the way I'd like.
I think I'll reread this book to make sure I caught everything I needed to catch and enjoy it properly.
I love love LOVE the cover. 10/10.

My first ever full fantasy and wow. It was a little tough to keep up at the beginning but I fell in love with our MC right away Sage was amazing. She showed strength in trying to make sure her family was safe for so many years( I’m not going spoilers

Synopsis: Pizza-loving Sage will do anything for a ticket to Prince Louis’ birthday party, whether that’s shooting bad guys at bars, chasing them in hover cars, or dropping one hundred stories from the highest skyscraper in Diamond City. She doesn’t mind attracting a little bit of positive attention from the royal family so long as no one learns her true She hails from an ancient warrior race, and kicking ass in war is her specialty.
Only those days are long over. At least, she thinks they are until her nephew sells her out to the royal family, and they’re nowhere near as air-headed as Prince Louis. Tiaras and dinner parties are far from their minds when they blackmail her into confronting a vicious (and flamboyant) warlord whose forces are invading the city. Choosing sides might have been a no-brainer, but Sage learns the royal family is using their citizens as test subjects in experiments to attain immortality, and the warlord is actually fighting to stop them.
If Sage thought kneading dough was difficult, now she must choose between a tyrannical (and charming) warlord or a bubbly prince to take the throne. If Sage wants any semblance of a normal life again, let alone run a pizza shop, she must pray that her longing for love doesn’t cloud her judgment. Then again, what girl would say no to promises of colorful weddings and spectacular fireworks, even if the guy who’s offering them has a not-so-righteous agenda of his own?
My thoughts: I really like the cover and I thought the synopsis sounded good. The beginning chapters pulled me in and held my interest. My issues is there’s lots of things that I didn’t understand: allseer’s, warlords, other things that I have no clue about and I feel like we didn’t get info in them like we already know what they are when we don’t. I found Damian to be literally just a horny dude constantly and it was kind of annoying. The plot was a bit confusing and sometimes I was getting lost or I didn’t understand why things were happening they way they were. But I did like the overall storyline. I like Gertrude’s character a lot she’s very interesting.
I have book two so I will read it soon.

I enjoyed the world the author builds in this book. I think sometimes we forget as readers until we've created a fictional world of our own, just how difficult it is to be authentic with it. A lot of imagination went into all the details and the characters. Sage is an easy character to love, especially as someone that also loves pizza. It's humorous how she acts much younger than her age of 100, but the old saying goes that we're only as old as we feel.

Astrid Cole does a magical job portraying a post-war economy in a fantasy world.
We follow the story of Sage, who just wants to live her life running a pizza shop. She harbors a secret or two and it's these secrets that send on on a wild tale of action, adventure, grief, and romance.
I loved watching this story unfold. From the world-building, to the character personalities, to the plot twists. The juxtaposition between classes and regimes was jarring and hit close to home. The imbalance of power is dangerous!
I can't wait to see where the story takes me in the next book!
