I'm kinda digging thru Tom Cox's bibliography after being charmed by his folk horror fiction debut Help The Witch and his lovely pastoral walking books, and truly his youthful obsession with golf is the weirdest sidetrack he's been on. Maybe that's where he got the love of walking from?

His debut "Nice Jumper" was kinda an interesting look at how kids get into golf, and especially working class kids such as Cox's clique was made up.

"Head" details his attempt as a 30-something to get back in the game after a decade of relatively successful music journalism. Cox has a pleasant voice, and the subculture is definitely odd enough to keep you mildly interested throughout, but I feel that having at least a passing enthusiasm for the game is probably recommended here. Besides Tiger Woods, pretty much every guy mentioned here was an unknown to me!

At one point Cox mentions having spent £5,000 of his own money over a couple months just to enter three tournaments (including expenses). Yes, this is the kinda stuff I take away.
