This book's ending wasn't satisfying to me because it was sad in a way that was like "a war happened. No one is allowed to have a truly happy ending or completely heal because that's just reality", and that doesn't necessarily resonate with me. I felt the timeskips make the beginning of the book a bit confusing. I think it was a good book, but I didn't necessarily enjoy it.
I felt Jutta and the girls being raped in one of the last chapters was an unnecessary addition. I understand women after often brutalized in war and raped but that doesn't mean a chapter where it happens needs to be tacked on if it's not really properly explored or expressed.

It took me months to get through this one, for whatever reason. But I actually appreciated the time I took. It helped me conceptualize how long these characters suffered during the war. My slow reading matched the slower paced plot too. In general I’m a little worn out on WWII fiction, but I can appreciate the skill this writer has. There was so much brilliant poignancy, even when not much action was happening. It reminds me of The Goldfinch in that way. I’m interested to check out Doerr’s other work! I bet I’ll like it even more than this, it not being WWII historical fiction. I just don’t need depressing war stories in my life these days!

Couldn’t wait for the N@zi soldiers to die and they kept not doing so. Ugh. This book was a slog and the themes the author was trying to illustrate would have worked much better in a WW1 tale. Somehow, no real mention of the Holocaust beyond vague illusions, really feels like it romanticizes the war and German side.

A really beautiful book.
Beginning was a little slow, but once Werner and Marie-Laure’s stories started to weave closer and closer I started to enjoy it a lot more!
Definitely a beast of a book, but the audio book was well done.
