I like Rose Person's romances because the plots are often imaginative and not typical of the regency genre. In this story, the heroine is betrothed to someone she immediately dislikes, mainly because he was not of her choosing. Lord Pendleton is ready to sign the papers to betroth himself to Lady Augusta but when she snubs him and his brother suddenly dies, he is determined to find a way to end the betrothal. Lady Augusta realizes she may have been too hasty in rejecting her fiancé. When Lord Pendleton finds himself in embarrassing situations, Lady Augusta comes to his rescue and determines to win him over.

An enjoyable quick read with likeable characters and a good plot. This series is starting off really well and I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

I really enjoyed this lovely regency romance! Lady Augusta is betrothed to Lord Stephen Pendleton against her will by her father. Circumstances change and Lord Pendleton becomes the Marquis of Leicestershire. Suddenly their betrothal is maybe not so certain and when it appears someone is out to ruin Stephen’s reputation things between them change. I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Stephen and Augusta. There’s some intrigue as they try to figure out who is causing the trouble. The book is well written and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys regency romance!

This is cute and good for what it is (that being a short, time-filler romance) but many parts just seemed exaggerated and completely unrealistic, mainly towards the end. When everyone was speaking in long paragraphs it felt like how everyone used to write speech in creative writing at 13/14 before learning how to make a conversation flow better and show, not tell, in their writing.

Also, for a regency romance, it felt like the actual romance part took a backseat. In the second half the story mainly focused on who was trying to ruin Leicestershire, not the relationship developing, but somehow they fall in love in the space of two weeks even though the only things they talk about are the mystery and how rude they have been to each other. I appreciated the added plot line but I felt the focus was misplaced.

That being said, it was a fun little read to fill a couple hours and I want to read the next in the series as my next short read, so it’s not bad at all.
