I don’t think I’ll ever forget this version of Mary Shelley, or the character of Ry.
Frankenstein is one of my favorites, so I wasn’t sure about this concept. BUT, it’s so clever, and kind of fucking brilliant. Winterson rehashes portions of the original story and its inception while creating a modern day version with sex bots, cryogenics, and reanimation, raising the question of who/what we really are. My favorite bits are when Shelley herself was a character. Bold and strange, but I’m 100% on board.

Oof, this one is trying to do so much, and none of it particularly well. Jumps in time in a jarring, nonsensical way. Incessant use of short sections that clearly are supposed to land with emotion, but for me just left me skipping ahead to see if anything good was coming before the next dramatic pause. Reads more like a film treatment than a novel.
This is a brilliant, lyrical exploration of what it means to be human. Jumping back and forth between the early 19th century and the near future, Winterson engages two different incarnations of Mary Shelley and her infamous creation Victor Frankenstein. Oh, and there's a ton of talk about AI, about what it means to play God, to create in one's own image.
There are passages from this book I'll be meditating on for a long time. One of the best books of 2019, and probably the 2010s.

Bon fil narratif et incroyables reflexions qui en émergent.

A 3.5 for me but more towards high end than not. So rounded up. The only reason not a 4 is how fast things switch which is the point I believe but something I had to work to keep up with...may not be smart enough to fully appreciate lol.
