This is a very intense book that I found off TikTok, it just seemed like one of those silly “wish i could read it for the first time” recs. But it’s not 😭
The premise is very interesting and themes of humanity were very well discussed; however, those with weak stomachs should put down this book. I would say I have a fairly high tolerance for darker themes and graphic scenes, but even this book tested my limits.
Where the book lost me is, until the ‘twist’ at the end, the main character was very confusing to me in whether or not I was supposed to be rooting for him. I was decidedly not after he
SAed a pivotal character
, but I found the rest of the book hard to finish as the main character was an exceedingly worse and worse person in a very unsettling way. And while this can be a good thing, much of the book relies on the severe harming of women which I do not particularly enjoy in my books.
I still gave the book a 3.5 because the world and ending is decidedly interesting, and if i could be more objective the rating would be higher, but reading is subjective and I would not recommend this book to most sane people. I guess that is what the author meant tho so there is a funny irony in there somewhere.

Weird book. Not what I expected. Well written but not something I would voluntarily choose again

Chilling, cold and detached. Harder to stomach than a lot of other horror novels I've read because of how clinical and unfeeling it is. There is no sense of right and wrong, at least not in the way you’d expect there to be, and even as someone who doesn’t eat meat, I found that this was bringing up feelings that wouldn’t come up if I was reading the same scenes except with cows in the place of humans. This left me with a lot to think about, and I think it’s a real success. As disturbing as it is, it’s well thought through and gripping until the very end. I disagree with other reviewers - I loved the ending and thought it was extremely believable, and the most realistic way this story could have been concluded. It is an uncomfortably honest depiction of human nature.
