It took me a little bit to get into this book, but once I got there, I couldn't put it down. Disturbing and chilling, but gripping and amazing

This was probably my least favorite of Flynn's books, but I still did enjoy it. It was quite a twisted story where Camille is just as destructive to herself as any of the other forces working against her. Her mother is a piece of work and you wonder how anyone doesn't see through her facade. Her half-sister is trouble and every scene with her jumps off the page because she is so unpredictable. I'm really not sure what happened in Flynn's past to allow her to delve so deeply into this kind of human pain and cruelty, but she does an amazing job of conveying those expressions and feelings to the reader.

I’m no Jessica Fletcher, so if you give me a mystery and I can figure it out fairly early on then it really isn’t much of a mystery. With that said I can’t really describe (destroy ?) this as I would like to without some *spoiler* bits, so if you have your sights set on reading this book then you best stop reading this now. The author has gone all out to give her readers the most unpleasant, depthless characters imaginable with the small exception of our narrator, journalist Camille Preaker, who finds herself back in her loathsome home town to cover a possible serial killer who targets young girls. This has sex, violence, murder, Munchausen by Proxy, teen drugs, alcoholism, a particularly irritating dysfunctional family, and a bit of “Heathers: The Early Years” thrown in for good measure. At one point the author basically used a M. Night Shyamalan twist which seemed obvious, and the obviousness of it came from the over-the-top unbelievable character depiction of Adora, the narrator’s mother. Mommy dearest and her other spawned brat, Camille’s sister, were just too much…TOO MUCH.

loved the story! but felt like the book hurt sometimes from the author making things a tad bit too overexplained and explicit. considering the topics, the audience of the novel would be able to come to many of the conclusions she wanted us to arrive without moments where the descriptions felt redundant, making it feel like the book needed a bit more refinement to scrap those moments
