This was a quick read.  Attica Locke knows how to write a mystery with insightful characters. Set in East Texas, the passage of time seems nonexistent while racial tensions flare following two murders in the small southern town of Lark. The victims—a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman—is the trigger for deep-seated social and political issues. Locke’s writing captures the ominous atmosphere that saturates both the community and its broader context. "Bluebird, Bluebird"  was a page-turner, drawing readers into its compelling tale. Yet, even with the intrigue, I cannot help but think about the troubling parallels to historical injustices and the CURRENT regression of societal progress.  Also, I still have much difficulty hearing racial slurs.  ☹
