I stated reading the book and added the audiobook with it. The audiobook is very straightforward while the book gives more details. Its a good story about a young women who wants to know what happened to her mother. It ends with a slightly unanswered question. The characters are interesting but I would have liked more growth for the main female character.
This was not an easy book to get into. Wordy and very long winded for my liking. I felt the storyline got lost in the telling of the book and it was hard to know what the story was working to unfold.
I read the first 100-150 pages, skipped to around 200-210 started reading and didn't miss ANYTHING that was happening, then skipped to near the ending and same thing.
I am glad others liked it, just way too uninteresting for me. Seemed like just a vampire that liked to talk about himself.

Gave 4 stars for its imagination rather than because I enjoyed it. I'm not a fan of vampires but the book shouldn't be marked down because of this.
Original, sensuous and clever.

The Idea of this book was great. The pace was rather slow, the narration was in a weird form, and the ending was very anticlimactic.

It just didn't draw me in enough to make me want to finish it.
I haven't read a vampire novel in a long time. Was very glad this one was mostly a flashback to ancient times rather than something modern. Pretty cool story with some new "vampire rules". The ending wasn't great, but overall I liked it.
I read this book because it came with Danyell's highest recommendations (though now, as she re-reads it, she finds it doesn't please her as much now as it did so many years ago). I was also curious because it is fiction by a nonfiction author I greatly admire, Tom Holland (author of the excellent Rubicon and the rather good Persian Fire). The story is the secret existence of George Gordon (Lord Byron) as a vampire. Kind of a cool premise, and well-told,perhaps surprisingly so for a vampire story. Anyway, it's worth reading if you're into that sort of thing.
Dracula meets Interview With A Vampire. The language has all the feeling of Dracula. I thought more than once how surprised I was that it was written in 1995, not in 18something. Not flashy but quite enjoyable.
