Very entertaining book. The world building is very well done and the magic system is unique. At times I felt that the author was trying to be a bit too convoluted and throwing in "surprises" when it wasn't really necessary. I will be reading the rest of the series.

I'm choosing to bump this from 4 to 5 stars in response to a re-read I just completed in preparation for reading the 3rd book.
Seriously.. This is a GREAT series. I'm starting the third book in it now, so I guess technically I'm not allowed to say that until I finish the whole series, but screw that. Its' going to rock. I have faith in Brent Weeks. The Night Angel trilogy got me interested in him, this series is making me love him.
Hell, I think I'm even going to add a favorites tag to this book. There, it's now on my favorites shelf.
Good stuff.

I found this book to be enjoyable, but to have a badly flawed underpinning for the magic system.
However, the other aspects of the magic were interesting, the story was engaging, and the characters were nicely written.

I found the beginning really dragging and found the luxin really hard to visualize. It just did not appeal to me. Also, I thought the humor was a bit childish, especially the moments when Kip said something out loud that was really stupid/uncalled for. The only character that appealed to me was the Prism itself. Maybe I just had expectations that were waaaay to high, because everyone kept recommending this to me. I also had to return this book so I had to read it really quickly, that didn't help in terms of trying to get into the story. But honestly, if I'd had all the time in the world to read this, maybe I would have bumped the rating up half a star, it wouldn't have made that much of a difference I think.
