This was adorable. It's the kind of book every young LGBTQ+ kid should have available to read--it's smart, it's not condescending.

I like that the ending was ambiguous, that Mattie hadn't decided on any definitions. She was still questioning, and that's okay. I'm glad that's something kids will be able to read!

This was a cute middle-grade novel about a middle school student, Mattie, who realizes that she’s forming a crush on the new British student, Gemma, as they begin to work on the school production of Romeo and Juliet. Filled with some of the middle school drama of crushes, dances, and cliques, this story came across as very sweet and realistic.

I received an ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

4 1/2 out of 5 stars!!!!!

I think Barbara Dee understands Shakespeare exactly in the right way to appeal to me. I can’t believe this adorable baby gay story for kids ended up having the most gripping interpersonal drama I’ve read since my Locked Tomb reread. Maybe it’s something about the queer experience being so palpably captured with some incredibly engaging and relatable characters?

If you’re looking for a light, sweet book that’ll make you so happy for the future for all the baby queers out there, this one is exceptional.

This book was so wonderful! I absolutely loved the characters and the way bisexuality is talked about in Star-Crossed. The background references to Romeo and Juliet were done well without the book feeling stripped directly word-for-word from Shakespeare. Star-Crossed is now one of my all-time favourite reads.

An endearing and realistic foray into queer identities in adolescence! While I think the writing is a bit more geared toward younger readers, I think adults and children alike would find hope, love, and identity in this novel.
