ONLY BECAUSE I'M MAD THAT MATTIE AND GEMMA DIDN'T GET TOGETHER. I REALLY WANTED THAT

I need a sequel where they get together.

Fun, cute story. I love a queer coming of age story. This one feels especially personal to me, as I was at the same age as Mattie at my bisexual awakening, and am also a theatre geek. Love it.

This was a really wonderful story, and so important, and so so so well done. I'm so glad I requested it for the library I work at.

The ended was a little vague, but then again, so was 8th grade.

I loved this book. Largely because I loved the relationships between the characters, very evolved for middle school children, that's actually a hopeful sign for the future because I think the coming generations are going to change everything, for the better. I'll not review the story other than to say it's well worth the read - even if you aren't a Shakespeare aficionado. It's a just a great story.

The book that is both perfectly sweet and perfectly suited to the tween audience is so very rare. And then throw in that the romance is LGBTQ+, amazing. This is all about eighth grade crushes and coming to understand yourself, all with Romeo and Juliet in the background.

SpoilerOh, and the coming-out scene with Mattie's older sister is just so lovely I wanted to cry.

I went in to this knowing it was aimed at middle schoolers. I, unfortunately, am no longer a middle schooler, and haven’t been for a couple years. So, naturally, it was a lower reading level than I was used to, and I got through it pretty quickly, but honestly, it was refreshing. Books like these (although usually they were considerably more heteronormative) were my favourite things to read back in middle school days, and this book felt like nostalgia had just kicked me in the stomach.

That being said, it was adorable. I squealed several times because it was so cute, and Mattie’s inner journey felt like something I could definitely relate to. I needed wholesome wlw books in my life when I was in middle school, so although I didn’t get to experience that, I am eternally grateful that this book exists so other kids can.

It was adorable and sweet and just what kids book about this should be.
