This is a middle grade story about a girl who is doing a school production of Romeo and Juliet. She gets pulled into playing Romeo, while developing a crush on the girl Juliet. This was such a cute story of a girl discovering her feelings for another girl, with a ton of Shakespeare thrown in. I think this would have been so great to read as a kid. My biggest issue as an adult reading it was all the characters felt a bit younger than 8th graders. The characters also were a little one-dimensional and didn’t leave a strong impression.
3.5-3.75... maybe a 4?
This book was obviously not written for my age demographic as the main character is a 12-year-old girl; however, I feel like this is a great book for anyone who is younger and questioning their sexuality. It is cute and wholesome and it does a great job with a "touchy" subject. This book in the right hands could definitely have a positive influence.
I really enjoyed the Shakespeare bits (which was most of it). I did feel as though Mattie was a little bit flat compared to the rest of the characters but at the same time, it kind of made sense with the POV.
Really glad I picked this up!

Very cute coming of age story for a girl who realizes her world has expanded more than she expected it to. I enjoyed the supporting cast and the kind view of everyone involved. Rooted for Romeo and Juliet to get together, for once.
This book is super cute and a great read for middle grade readers who are LGBTQ (or questioning)--and their parents, friends, and their parents' friends. Having a crush in middle school is a high stakes experience, or at least it can feel that way, but when your crushes are outside of social expectations the stakes get even higher. This book captures that feeling, of being young and uncertain, delightfully, while also working to calm fears that kids might be feeling. Well-written, with charming, realistic characters, I strongly recommend it.
