Dang, this story is so sweet. Mattie is very believable. She perfectly captures that awkward time. I loved that she spaced out when she was dealing with all her dilemmas. Her character developed really well along with her feelings for her "crushes" and dealing with dynamics of friendships. By the end, she didn't have all the answers, but she had a better sense of herself.

Also, Shakespeare was used really well. We need more middle grade with Shakespeare sprinkled in!

Loved it!!

This is the kind of book I wish I'd had in middle school.

I liked it, obv is it for a much younger audience (middle grades book)(mc is 8th grader)
cute story
teen angst and bi/gay character? tho she is so uncertain it is hard to tell and if you weren't aware/looking for it you might miss it
probably good to have in a collection of a middle school as those are the kids who are searching for ppl who have similar feelings and experiences as themselves

This was really cute. I'm kind of upset about how open ended the ending was, but it was fine. Gemma and Mattie were cute. I feel like the way Mattie's crush developed was done really well. She didn't exactly discover her sexuality, but she learns that she likes a specific girl and that's okay. I like the parallels that were incorporated between Mattie and the play. This was a really quick read and I can't for it to come out in stores so I can start recommending it to people.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that handles first crushes so honestly. That it includes a same-gender crush makes it even greater. There is just so much to love about thus book: friendships jealousy, misunderstandings, love, family dynamics... highly recommend for ages 11 and up.

This was an adorable book! Mattie was so cute, and she felt like a little sister as I was reading. Even when I was cringing a bit, I was smiling. The book was light, and sweet. I liked the chapter length and the Romeo and Juliet quotes at the beginning of each chapter that gave a little clue to what was going to happen. This book was a breath of fresh air. It was light, and funny, and sweet. Not to mention diverse, which was also really nice. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and would completely recommend it to anyone and everyone. 4 stars!

This was a mega heartwarming queer middle grade about a girl discovering she might have a crush on her Romeo & Juliet cast mate!

The focus here isn’t on a relationship and it’s not a romance, it’s more about Mattie taking a lead role in her own life and navigating these confusing new feelings. It’s suuuuuper soft and gave me all the warm and fuzzies.

I also liked how this dealt with girl drama, and how rubbish it feels to be excluded by the popular girls when you’re in middle school or high school. It also touches very lightly on toxic masculinity and people who dumb themselves down for their friends’ sakes.

Also, can we get a hellyeah for the English teacher continuing to be the queer kids’ best allies?

a gorgeous book about love and identity and figuring yourself out.

Read this as a middle schooler and it changed my gay life.
