Margot has returned to her childhood home for the funeral of her estranged parents. As she familiarizes herself with the estate and winery left to her in their will, she comes up against a dark force that has been terrorizing her family for generations.

I was rigid with terror as Margot fought tooth and nail to survive her family curse and couldn’t stop reading once I’d started. What is the curse? Can the land be healed? So many questions raced through my mind as I turned the pages.

Add this one to your bookshelf and keep the lights on as you read this incredible supernatural thriller.

Oh boy. Where to start. Following in the tradition of gothic style novels, this book both scared the crap out of me, and also made me tear up. I really enjoyed the pacing of this book. Nothing felt disjointed or out of place.

Margot is a believable and sympathetic main character. She reacts to all the horror in a way that feels very realistic. She’s scared, even paralyzed at times by everything that’s happening. She makes bad choices born out of sheer panic and boy does she pay for it. She also has so much heart and empathy when she finally gets her wits about her. The side characters are ok, Kant is for sure the most fleshed out. He’s written pretty well. I definitely grew fond of him. Oh and of course Marsh the golden retriever.

Some of the horror bits had me reading with safety squints on. One part in particular that takes place in the attic had my heart pounding. I had to set the book down and calm down before carrying on. The way Darcy Coates describes the house and the ever present heaviness and wrongness that fill it up are so well written. You can almost feel what the main character is feeling. (It’s terror btw)

The ending is so good. Like just so perfect for the book and everything we learn throughout. The way Margot handles things at the end is perfection. One of the things I love the most about horror is you can be absolutely terrified on one page, and tearing up the next. There are so many beautiful details in this book. You should definitely check it out.

Slow af. Took forever for it to get interesting

Gallows Hill by Darcy Coates is an hauntingly spooky and hair raising read! I read this at night and felt like I was being followed or watched all evening. Absolutely riveting. It feels like you’re really there!

This story follows a girl name Margot, who goes back to her family home after her parents’ sudden passing. The old winery on Gallows Hill brings back eery feelings for Margot but she can’t quite remember why.
As the new owner of the estate, Margot quickly realizes things aren’t exactly what they seem.
Can she survive the night? Why is no one being up front with her about what’s happening?

With will, determination, and bravery, Margot must endure the dead-fueled nights of Gallows Hill.

This book is an extremely immersive experience that will keep you looking over your shoulder, convinced you’re being watched.

Thank you Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

A bit slow at first, and you do begin to get frustrated with Margo in the beginning, but still an excellent spooky tale of justice served after a quarter millennium.
