This was a really good read! A bit slow at first with all the story telling, but man oh man were the details important! Once I hit around page 125 or so I couldn’t put it down!

My first Darcy Coates read, and I’m excited for more!

I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as Hunted. I found the writing to be amateur at best. It felt like the author grabbed thesaurus and just sprinkled random adjectives in, some of which didn't make sense to me in context. It also felt like there were a lot of loopholes... Rules that applied to some people and not others, conv niently. These we're largely explained away, but in a cheap and unsatisfying manor.

I felt like all the characters lacked depth. I didn't really care about any of them. The creepiness was promising but didn't pan out for me. I also think if you're going to talk about the vastness of a home that's been built on for generations, then the front cover should reflect such a structure instead of just showing an average farmhouse. It felt silly when the main character kept getting lost even though in the book it was described as being a humongous home, I couldn't help but recall the front cover that shows a regular old house. I sort of felt like telling the main character to just take a couple hours and walk around the house a few times instead of lurking in the two rooms she occupied most of the book and then getting lost on a daily basis.

I actually took notes in this book because I was so annoyed by some of the sloppy writing. I found the ending particularly silly. I am reading From Below now, and finding it a much better read, but in all honesty, I can't recommend this book to anyone.

If you would have asked me around 100 pages in, I thought I was going to give up on this one. That's unusual for me with a Darcy Coates book. But I'm so glad I kept going.

The second half of this book was so creepy and exactly what I was looking for.

The funny thing is, I didn't even hate the first half, I think it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Darcy is always a descriptive writer but this was almost too much. It made it very movie-esque though. I could 100% see this on the big screen (as it should be).

My biggest complaint, and to me this is a huge one, there was a major aspect of the story that was reused literally from another book of hers I JUST read. To me that is lazy writing and it really bothered me.

Other than that, I actually do recommend this book but just go in prepared to maybe be bored a little bit

This book is really good at creating tension and dread. It is mostly dark with nary a glimmer of light except for the dog and the very very end.

I think in the end though it’s a good metaphor for righting wrongs and the injustice many in the past faced and how to address those atrocities moving forwarded.
