this started as the biggest snooze-fest and did not pick up for the first 200 pages - however, as predictable as darcy coates’s writing can be, the twists and turns of this book were shocking and each development in the last 3rd of the book kept my attention (especially the reveal at the end!!). while it was not perfect, darcy coates is very creative and knows how to put her own spin on classic horror tropes. a creepy 4/5

This was my first Darcy Coates book and it most definitely will not be my last! This is the scariest book I have read all year, I loved it!
Gave me literal goosebumps!

This book started a little slow, but ended up transforming into one of the scariest books I’ve read. Great read for someone wanting a book to keep them up at night.

The story follows Margot after her parents death. She inherits their home, grounds and winery… and so much more. This story is atmospheric and gloriously gothic. The descriptions of the grounds and the winery were creepy. I am a fan of Darcy Coates’ writing and find this type of horror very enjoyable especially during fall.

I’ve seen some say it’s a bit dry or slow and I agree. This isn’t really for anyone who wants to jump into the action immediately. However, I really enjoyed these aspects of the book. It was strange and paced in a way that had chills crawling down my spine. It was awesome to read on my kindle with the lights off. Sure, there were moments where it lulled and took some convincing to pick back up. The MC could be very aggravating. But I still had a good, spooky time.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc of this book.

Following the mysterious death of her parents, Margot returns to her childhood home, Gallows Hill, to settle her parents estate and find answers to why her parents left her to be raised by her grandmother at a young age. What she doesn’t know is that once she arrives at Gallows Hill, she belongs to the land and can never leave.

The first half of the book felt like an atmospheric slow burn, however once it picked up it was really hard to put down. Gallows Hill had just the right amount of creepy and haunting and both the characters and the setting were beautifully written. This book is one where you get to watch a character unravel in many ways. She's seeking answers about her family, her home and herself.
However there are shadows and and nooses popping up everywhere. It was great that this kept you and her guessing about ghouls and what was really happening at Gallows Hill.

I’ve read nearly all of Darcy Coates’ books now and loved all of them, she has quickly become one of my favorite authors. This book was no exception.
