I really enjoyed the writing and the plot! Despite it feeling a bit slow in the middle, I was really engrossed in the story and loved the characters. The ending was a bit too rushed, but still good.

This was a 4 star read for me, because while I did love the descriptive writing, incorporation of Japanese myths and folklore, morally grey main character, and idea behind the reapers, I had a hard time getting into this book. All that said, I still do look forward to book 2 and wouldn’t discourage anyone from reading this book.

I can’t for some reason have morally grey characters because I love them and absolutely hate them at the same time. Messes with my mind too much

Great story, disappointing tropes at the climax.

I picked this novel because the premise reminded me of a YA favorite, Scythe by Neal Shusterman. Something I loved about this story was the different stewards of death in various nations and cultures existing in the same world. I would love to learn more about that part of this world in future books. Unfortunately, I had a similar experience with Keeper of Night as with Shadow and Bone — it was a little too young, trope-y, and predictable for me to really get into. I think teen me would have loved it, though!

This was so interesting but so dark. It definitely didn't feel YA to me. Props to the author for making me invested in the story even though the MC was unlikable (for understandable reasons). I wonder what's going to happen next...

I had my doubts about this story, but the writing is easy and interesting to fall into, and I found myself flying through chapters without even realizing it. The ending was a definitely a shock; there were a lot of bad vibes, but nothing I could imagine came close to what actually played out. I can't imagine what the sequel will be like, but I think I'm interested in picking it up later this year to see what is next for Ren.
