This book was inspiring and the writing was good. I love more the recent books than this one, but it was worth it!

I didn't like the codependency seen in both main characters or the manipulation and possessive self destructive actions.

Finished the whole book and while I loved it at first it was just so slow and the actually love part was lacking. The end the fmc FRUSTRATED ME. It just didn’t feel like a real ending to me because there was just too much back and forth. I also spotted some spelling and plot mistakes. Like that there were two body bags at some point and then the one girl lived with her but then didn’t and a few other things that didn’t make sense. I’m not going to actually rate it because I don’t like dragging down the start but it was probably like a 2 or 3 stars because there were certainly some aspects that I loved but her childish behavior and their righting really got on my nerves. this book and story had so much potential :(

Have you ever been so frustrated with a book you had to put it down and cool off? And not because it was riddled with errors or poorly written - because you were so incredibly mad at the characters. Characters mired in angst as a couple and individually. It was need to throw things level of frustrating. Want to scream at two people who aren't even real to get their sh*t together, frustrating. It was the most slow burn happily for now that I've ever read.

I don't mean slow burn to the 'spice' either. That's hot and heavy, there to make you wonder how they're so sh*t at communicating when they can do that so fluently.

Domestic Violence does feature in this book. And DV always hits me hard. Abusive parent and the parent who looks the other way - where one knows they always have the power. Where they know they only have to say one, ONE, word to make you topple - those people and characters make me want to scream. So the catharis that Aubrey felt facing her father was euphoric and the crash when he ripped the rug from under her again was equally infuriating.

Part of me wishes we had more of Jax's pov, to make things on his side a little more clear cut and soften the punches as they hit. Then again, I realky just wanted to shake that man and ask him how he thought this was a good idea.

10/10 spice scene. But the emotional moments in between are heavy.

• bloody well hate miscommunication man, why couldn’t he just tell her the damn truth about the prison visits
• characters are so immature, they overthink everything and refuse to communicate
• jax was so damn toxic, so pushy and refuses to listen to what brey wants I am not here for it
• I’ll allow it for the spicy scenes
• but lord what happened with Jay that character development came out of nowhere
• could definitely have been 100 pages shorter, super repetitive and so much unnecessary conflict
• i enjoyed the vibes but the relationship felt a little too toxic and restrictive for me rather than 'protective' possessive

TWs: Domestic abuse, panic attacks, alcoholism, bullying, foster care (mentioned), homicide, fire, suicide, claustrophobia, mention of rape, vomiting, cheating

A lot of this was problematic to me. The characters constantly behaved in a way that contradicted themselves. There are significant plot holes. Everyone felt one-dimensional. Then there was the actual relationship between Aubrey and Jax. Not at all healthy or appealing. Aubrey is constantly trying to set solid boundaries and Jax could not care less. The 1.5 star rating was for the beginning of the book which started off with such promise.

TW: domestic abuse, child abuse, toxic relationship all very graphically described.

This book is tied for the most toxic relationship I’ve ever seen in a romance novel. It would be flat-out number 1 if the characters didn’t all acknowledge the toxicity of it, and I’d like to believe that counts for something. That said I do love a good “two fucked up people coming together” story and this is a pretty damn good one.

So, this terribly abused girl escapes her abusive home in a highly traumatic way, then gets with a guy who is as equally as manipulative, possessive, and provoking as her father, but he's hot so it's fine? Through most of the scenes with them together I was either rolling my eyes or making a vaguely disgusted face

The big secret that is the reason for the ongoing tension with them also wasn't that big of a deal?
