some were SO GOOD (gold coast, subtotals, nadine at 35, grace period) but majority i was just like. okay

This book was just okay. I find with most anthologies you’ve got some hits and some misses, but none of these really struck me or were impactful enough to stay with me. I loved writing flash fiction in my writing classes during college but reading it didn’t have the same effect for me.

Quite a good collection of short-short stories including work from Stuart Dybek, Raymond Carver, David Foster Wallace, John Updike, and Joyce Carol Oates. I had this book as well as _Sudden Fiction_ for one of my creative writing classes in college. Some of the stories really hit me. Some of them annoyed me. But most of them I breezed through with indifference. Still, short-short stories make you feel like you're making progress when reading. You can read through 5 easily in bed before your eyes close.

This tells me that I really need to read more short story collections. I enjoyed it very much.

Not the kind of collection that you can read in one sitting though.

This was a 3.5 stars for me. I liked it and then some.

Most of these stories were fine, but didn't do much for me. They were forgettable and kind of mundane. It's unfortunate because I love flash fiction and went into this collection ready to find a bunch of new wonderful authors. There were definitely a few standouts, and I must read more Mary Morris in the future, but overall I didn't care about many of these. I also didn't dislike more than a handful. This whole collection just felt very middle of the road.
