Took a while for me to get into it, but I was crying by the end!
Not my fav of Amy Tan, but still very good and hard to put down.
The way this book bookended the history of the family in China with a modern day tale of the daughter was very effective. I enjoyed the present day story as well as the history. Amy Tan shows once again she is an expert storyteller and gets mother/daughter relationships just right.
i enjoyed this book. i liked how the author managed the two-timeline story line that i feel has annoyed me recently in other books. she teased the 'history' story, told 75% of the now story, then wrapped up the history, then wrapped up the book--much more satisfying than back and forth and back and forth and back. great story, real characters, very readable.

I love sweeping family epics. This would make a great movie.

My 3/5 rating says it all. This book was middle of the road average. Family and the unknown past of your family members are the focal point. It's a great, Heartfelt topic but when I read that she is a "bone setters daughter" I thought it would be a bit more mystical, have more folklore. It was good but had I know it was more serious I would have read it at a different time. Not when I was looking for light summer reading.
