I really enjoyed this book. The middle section was the strongest, and where Tan's talent lies: bringing history and culture alive for the contemporary reader. I wish we had gotten there sooner, and learned even more about the mother's life in the US, but it is a solid effort from a good author.

Admittedly it took a bit for this book to grow on me. I was almost anxious to skip ahead and read the translation of LuLing’s life story in the second half of the book. As Ruth reveals more about her childhood and relationship with her mother you can see her reflecting on it with new understanding. Ruth reconciles the hurt she experienced as a child and her new perspective as an adult seeing it from her mother’s perspective. It doesn’t quite come full circle for Ruth but I think it is healing and eye opening for her to go through.

There is a documentary on Amy Tan which mirrors many of the experiences of Ruth and LuLing. In many ways that made the book more heart breaking to me. In many ways it also made it more beautiful because she took her family life story and wove it into this book.

Worth reading - it’s a book that simmers letting all the flavours mingle into one.
