Well I liked this book. I also didn't. It is split in three different sections. When I was reading the first section I honestly wanted to put the book down. When I got past that to the second section it got very very interesting. If you decide to read it just keep going.

A beautiful book about three generations of women leading very different lives that all echo on with eachother- as family does. Relatable, realistic characters and family dynamics. I loved it, though it took my a while to get into

3.5 stars. Not as heartrending as some of Any Tan's other books.

This was the first of Any Tan's books that I read and I really loved it. It's a long time since I read this book but I liked everything about it - the writing, the characters, and the historical detail. Because of this book, I went on to read all of Amy Tan's books.

The author, Amy Tan is known as a great story teller, and I totally agree. This was a great story, it went by so fast.

This book tells the story of three generations of women (Ruth, her mother LuLing and LuLing's nursemaid, Precious Auntie), from a chinese village in the early 1900, to modern-day San Francisco.

This is such a compelling story and so beautifully written.

Told in 3 books with book One being overly long to slough through in establishing the tension of this Mother - Daughter angst. But hanging in was so worth it. Book 2 shares the history and 3 is the present sorting its way.
